Did you know that poisonous dart frogs can be as small as your thumbnail? And the males look after their young by using tiny puddles on leaves as a nursery!
Did you know that trees can ‘talk’ to each other?! The Acacia tree, when sensing its leaves are ‘under attack’ will release tannins, leaving the leaves tasting bitter. Thus, preventing overgrazing! This triggers nearby trees to do the same, preventing themselves from being grazed.
Did you know that baby elephants suck their trunks for comfort, just like human babies sucking their thumb? And that elephants can recognise the remains of a family member and will morn that individual?!
So, this isn’t a post about random facts – I guess it could be, but it’s the start of my new ‘Environmental Writings’ section. In the future this section will host a bunch of pieces about all things environmental, from simple hints and tips to eco-consciousness to journalistic type articles about environmental/ wildlife news, issues and events.
I also figured the best way to start this is by explaining why I want to do this in the first place – get the message out there that is, what drives me?
To start with I guess I should explain my goals for this page, my thoughts/aspirations and whatever. Its like a repeat of my first ever post (read it here if you wish: http://biodegradablegypsy.com/index.php/2019/12/09/about-me/) but I guess more specific.
Let’s start from the beginning….
I went to the wonderful Bangor university and studied Environmental Conservation. I started at 21, after I had finally figured out that I loved wildlife but I didnt know much else. An interest soon grew to passion for the environment, nature, the outdoors and all the creatures within. In my final year I started as the environmental editor and I thought it was quite cool. I graduated with a first which was great and decided that I had to go on to do a masters. Enter van life.
I went to the University of Stirling to do a master’s in environmental management. To this day I haven’t found that one thing I want to study and focus on within this large sector, so these broad courses were perfect for me! I was only there a few months and decided I needed to live in a van.

I adore the van and what it allows me to do, although I am still searching for my career. The thing which allows me to spread the message of all I know as well as all I still want to learn. So, I decided to come here, on a quest to write about what I think is important, to hopefully spread meaningful messages and maybe engage others in my passion too.
What’s funny is that this started with facts such as the above, a genuine fascination in wildlife and nature and watching good old David Attenborough. It grew from fascination to a career choice with just a degree, or two!
Also thanks to this post I have fulfilled my goal of posting twice a month! See my other 2020 goals here: http://biodegradablegypsy.com/index.php/2020/01/04/20-things-i-want-to-do-in-2020/
I look forward to the start of this venture, I hope you will join me.
